Academics and Activities

In 6th grade, students are invited to participate in the orchestra. The instruments in the orchestra are the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Students learn how to hold, play, and read music throughout the year during class time at our school. Students then participate in a district-wide 6th-grade orchestra concert in April. They are encouraged to continue playing in the 7th grade at Great Bend Middle School.

In 6th grade, students can join the band. Teachers show and demonstrate various instruments early in the Fall and host an instrument display night where students can explore instruments and parents/guardians can learn more about the program. 

Some instruments are available for "loan" from USD 428, while others must be purchased by parents/guardians.

During class time at our school, students learn how to hold, play, and read music throughout the year, and give a district-wide 6th-grade concert in the Spring. They are encouraged to continue playing into the 7th grade. 

Youth Choir is a district-wide, audition-based program open to students in 4th-8th Grades. The purpose of this program is to provide students with experiences that will increase their musical knowledge and appreciation for the arts, and help prepare them for vocal music opportunities at the middle school, high school, and beyond.

Auditions are held in August, with rehearsals on Wednesdays from 5:45-6:00 in the High School choir room.

Elementary Scholars Bowl provides 5th and 6th-grade students with an opportunity to showcase their academic knowledge, critical thinking, and teamwork skills in a competitive setting. Team members are selected through tryouts and teacher recommendations and participate in practices throughout the year. The Scholars Bowl Team competes in at least two meets during the spring semester, representing their school while building confidence, collaboration, and a love of learning.
